Even though it holds the title of the briefest month, February is brimming with educational prospects owing to its distinctiveness and cultural importance. As education takes center stage at Master the Possibilities, I'm eager to highlight a few fantastic learning opportunities available at our Education Center and “Out & About” this month.
In recognition of Black History Month and its profound significance, Master the Possibilities is extending an invitation to participants to explore the Black History Museum right here in Ocala, where the compelling story of Howard Academy unfolds. Throughout its history, Howard Academy has earned acclaim as one of the preeminent Black schools in the state. The building underwent a transformative change in 2004, becoming the Black History Museum of Marion County.
Within its walls, visitors can engage with exhibits that vividly portray Florida's diverse history, showcasing key aspects such as Fort Mose, Black Seminoles, Federal Troops, Paradise Park, and other pivotal moments and notable figures from more recent history. This February 6 educational destination from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. costs $20 for members and $25 for the general public and includes a box lunch. Participants will travel on-own to Howard Academy. If interested, it is recommended to register soon. There are only a few spots left.
On February 15, embark on a virtual exploration with Tim Van Cleave, a Park Ranger from the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park, as he unveils from the park virtually the intricate narrative of the Underground Railroad and its profound impact on the quest for human freedom. This historical presentation will reveal a dynamic tapestry woven by diverse groups. Through the perspectives of Harriet Tubman, Free Black communities, Quakers, and Abolitionists, participants will hear about the complex network of connections empowering Freedom Seekers toward Canada or Mexico and learn about the strategies of the Underground Railroad. Although there is no cost to attend this dynamic presentation, registration is required. Sign up now for the Thursday, February 15 lecture from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Live Oak Hall.
Another Visiting Speaker virtual presentation this month will take place February 7 from Park Ranger Christopher Reid with the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park. Reid will give a virtual presentation and guided discussion about the history of Charleston, SC. His presentation will include the Revolutionary War Battle of Sullivan’s Island, the opening shots of the Civil War against the U.S. Army at Fort Sumter, the colonization of North and South Carolina, and many of the modern landmarks. There is no cost to attend this presentation. Registration for this event from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Live Oak Hall on February 7 is required.
